Development Update
As I start the first actual “time off” I have had in around 2 years (see my previous tumble about taking September to relax), I thought I would give you a quick development update.
For the past few weeks, I have been extremely busy planning and coding Alfred’s milestone 1.0 release. My main focus for this release is…
Add a few new excellent features
Make current features more discoverable
Further improve quality and consistency
Prepare new help / support website
Fix a number of minor outstanding bugs
Code review, removing any legacy code
Full performance analysis to ensure Alfred’s efficiency!
The main thing I have been working on in the past 2 weeks is improving the…
Global Hotkeys
Alfred’s Powerpack has had Global Hotkeys for a while but they have been tucked away under the Features preferences and limited in functionality. This is the key area for improvement in the next release and as such, the Global Hotkeys will be moved to a dedicated tab in the preferences. They will be easier to use and some of the things you will be able to are:
Assign hotkeys to Files and Applications (as you can already do)
Set Applications to Toggle (hotkey hides app if app is already visible)
Assign a hotkey directly to some AppleScript text, making it very easy to setup hotkeys which perform system functions
Assign hotkeys to Alfred’s script based extensions, supplying the extension argument.
Assign hotkeys to Alfred’s group extension type, allowing a hotkey to launch groups of applications in a single shot.
Hotkeys is just one area, there are many other smaller improvements across a large range of Alfred’s features which I will talk about here on this tumblr as they happen.
I love being excited about Alfred!
Alfred being at v1.0 is LONG overdue, he has been ready for this version number for many months, so it feels wonderful to finally be working towards this release.
I am really looking forward to having September to relax and get my personal life back on track before doing a big push in October to get Alfred to v1.0 where we can all celebrate how far he has come, and also dream about his amazing future! :)
